Church
and Society Committee
| St.
Mark's Committees |
The
mission of the Church and Society Committee is to stay in contact
with district, conference, and general church groups working
on social issues and discern areas of social justice to bring
to attention for study and action by the local church, district,
annual conference and general conference. For annual and general
conferences, this will be through the petition process (Book of Discipline, paragraph
252.2b, 507). This is accomplished by
-
Keeping
ourselves, our pastors, and our church council aware of
study and action needs and opportunities in our community,
state, nation, and the world.
-
Sponsoring
social education such as classes on the Social Principles
(United Methodist policy regarding social issues) and related
issues.
-
Sponsoring
opportunities for social service and action.
-
Connecting
with and supporting local interfaith organizations active in
social justice.
-
Discernment
of relevant social issues which are not currently being
addressed.
-
Advocating
for and responding to the peace and justice needs of all
people and all of creation.
