Counselor-in-Residence Program

The St. Mark's United Methodist Church Counselor-in-Residence program recognizes the right of all people to feel supported and connected to a community. Healing occurs within those fibers of connection to self and others. The counseling program is dedicated to providing resources and therapeutic support for both the St. Mark's and the Tucson community.

Description of Program

The St. Mark's Counselor-in-Residence program was created in 1995 to meet the needs of a growing, vibrant church community. Issues such as abuse, addiction, depression, relationship and family conflict, grief and loss, parenting, suicide, and mental illness required the intricate attention of a caring and compassionate church community. The church staff observed these needs and recognized the ways in which these issues could not be properly and ethically addressed within the boundaries of pastoral care. Staff needed to feel confident in making referrals to competent, caring mental health professionals and individuals and their families needed safe, confidential access to professional, affordable therapy. It was also recognized that psychological and emotional support could enhance the spiritual journey for many.

We at St. Mark's are very fortunate to have such a highly skilled, caring, professional as Lane Harmon, MC, CPC directing this program.

Lane brings a variety of experiences to her work with children, adolescents and adults to St. Mark's. Lane is State Certified with a Master's degree in Counseling. Her areas of specialty include depression, abuse, grief and loss and creative solutions to relationship problems.

The Counselor-in-Residence Program is sometimes referred to as a "quiet ministry". The security and confidentiality to those participants of the program demands that both the program itself and the therapist not always be high profile. However, the contributions to our community are far-reaching. The healing of one might translate into the courage to protect a child, or the formation of a loving bond, or the living of life to its absolute fullest. Each of us is enriched by this.

The Counselor-in-Residence program includes:

  • Counseling Support Groups
  • Therapeutic Support
  • Crisis Intervention and Assessment - referred by Pastors and Caring Ministries
  • Follow-up Phone Support For Individuals and Families
  • Connect St. Mark's Staff and Parishioners to Existing Community Resources
  • Holy Saturday Memorial Service
  • Youth Group Support and Resource Coordinator
  • Women's Day of Renewal
  • Lecture/Forum Series
  • Workshops
