Beyond Prayers and
the Pews:
Social Ministries at St. Mark's
If religion is to be more than private devotions and Sunday morning worship, individuals need to be informed about what is going on in society,
observe some of the challenges facing its neediest citizens,
discuss the place of religion in our culture, and be actively involved in
serving others. Towards that end, St. Mark’s is planning the following events and programs to help persons explore the social dimensions of their faith.
-
Information Forums
St. Mark’s will host a series of forums in which experts and elected officials will educate the public about key social and religious developments of our time. Topics
recently covered have included immigration, poverty in Tucson, and the rise of fundamentalism.
-
Field Observations
St. Mark’s, in conjunction with Borderlinks and Casa Maria, will sponsor free, one-day trips to the U.S./Mexico border and south Tucson to expose individuals to the some of the most disadvantaged communities in the region.
-
Discussion Groups
St. Mark’s will offer short-term Sunday school classes where persons can discuss a variety of social and religious issues recently raised in the popular media.
-
Service Projects
St. Mark’s, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, United Way, and the Children’s Action Alliance, will organize a variety of projects to enable individuals to act on their concerns for the needy. Planned projects include providing homeless persons temporary shelter at St. Mark’s, helping the working poor apply for earned tax credits, and giving disadvantaged children access to free or low-cost health insurance.
