Open Minds Book Group
St. Mark’s Open Minds Book Group will resume monthly meetings in September via Zoom, on the 3rd Friday of the month from 9:00 – 10:30 AM. New members are welcome! Here is our Fall book list chosen loosely on the theme of community, which may refer to people living in the same place, or a feeling of fellowship with others who share similar attitudes, interests, or goals. We seek community with others in multiple ways for a variety of reasons.
Books may be borrowed from the Pima County Public Library or purchased (new or used) from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Bookshop.org, which supports local booksellers.
Zoom link will be emailed.
September 18: This Tender Land, a Novel, by William Kent Krueger (2019)
During the summer of 1932, four orphan vagabonds journey into the unknown, crossing paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. This enthralling epic shows how the vast American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams, and makes us whole.
October 16: Dora: Daughter of Unforgiving Terrain, a Memoir, by Dora Rodriguez (2025
At age 19, Dora fled political violence in El Salvador with twenty-five others in search of safety in America, only to collapse on the migrant trail in the hot desert of southern Arizona. One of only thirteen survivors, Dora’s courage, compassion, and lifelong commitment to saving lives in the borderlands is inspirational.
November 20: The Tale Teller, a Novel, by Anne Hillerman (2019)
Joe Leaphorn, a retired tribal policeman, has been hired to find a missing biil, a traditional weaving that was donated to the Navajo Nation. His investigation takes a sinister turn when the lead suspect dies under mysterious circumstances. Hillerman combines crime, superstition, and tradition in this riveting mystery that brings the desert southwest vividly to life
December 18: To Free the Captives, A Plea for the American Soul, by Tracy K. Smith (2023)
Bearing witness to the terms of freedom afforded her as a Black woman, mother, and educator in the 21st Century, Smith offers a portrait of where we are four hundred years into the American experiment. In a personal manifesto, she argues that the soul is a tool for fulfilling our duties to one another and for answering a pressing question: Where are we going as a nation?
